UAYD: THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The Ulster Association of Youth Drama (UAYD) was set up in 1998 by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Prior to this the Arts Council had managed the Ulster Youth Theatre , a summer scheme providing residential training/rehearsals which led to a full-scale production seen by the general public. This continued until 1997 when the decision was taken to set up an organisation with a wider remit for supporting and developing the youth theatre sector.

UAYD was formally constituted in 1998 and aims to be the lead group operating in Northern Ireland to support, develop, encourage and promote youth theatre across the region. As such the organisation operates as a support group with a wide-ranging membership and support from youth theatres, youth groups, schools, individuals and young people.

Since 1998 the association has run many projects providing quality professionally led training and performances. UAYD offers support and advice services, publications, awards and bursaries as well as performing arts training regionally and through residential courses and performances.
